Steampunk Convention

The huge turnout at the first annual California Steampunk Convention, even in the midst of the harshest fiscal climate since the Great Depression, indicates there's more going on here than just people dressing up for tea and crumpets.

I tend to agree with my fellow panelist's conclusion that we may be witnessing a social movement that both shapes the lives of its active participants as well as spilling over into the broader culture in the form of literature, music, cinema, and fashion. Whether Steampunk represents a longing for a history with a better outcome that our current experience or just a fun way to spend your time and money, there is indeed something in the air.
